Dutch song Dorus - Twee motten
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

"Please, mister Cor Stein
excuse me that I interrupt you
but can you maybe for a moment scratch my back?"
"Well, Dorus, don't you have better things to do for me?"
"No, no, no, no, listen to me very careful
it is not what you think
but take a look in my collar
here, pay attention"

"Zeg, meneer Cor Stein
"Nee, nee, nee, nee, mot je even goed luisteren
't is niet wat u denkt
maar kijk effe in m'n kraag
hier, moet je opletten"

Two clothes moths are living in my old brown coat
And those two clothes moths moved recently in
You really don't know what to do
Such tender happiness for two
He's eating my whole coat to rags
Just for her sake, that cute dear moth
I call her Charlotte and his name is Bas
Two cute little clothes moths in my old brown coat

Er wonen twee motten in me ouwe jas
Hij vreet me hele jas kapot

At first I felt sort of threatend a bit
I thought: "It's just like I'm nibbled and bit"
But suddenly I spotted all the holes here
My first thought was: "Well, what can this be"
But soon I understood the case
I saw two clothes moths in those holes in conversation
I promptly grabbed the insect spray
But then the marriage was destroyed
And decided then
To let the happy couple stay there

I have a talent to be alone
But that was my own wise stubborn wish
A real commitment I have always been avoiding
Well, then my business relations do tell me quick
"Oh boy, please bring that coat to the dry clean shop
It is a rag, a piece of trash, and it will worsen
But just a vagabond like me
Feels only finally content
With an old brown coat
Two clothes moths and ten of their children

In my coat is living a moth-family
I let them play wildly as a toddler group
I see one in my collar now
They eat their bellies full and round
They're eating my whole coat to rags
Because a moth has got to live
My darling Charlotte and tattery Bas
With their cute little moth kids in my old brown coat

Een familie motten woont 'r in me jas
Ik laat ze ravotten als een kleuterklas
Nou zitten ze boven in me kraag
En eten zich een volle maag
Ze vreten me hele jas kapot

Tom Manders (stage name Dorus) (1921-1972) was a Dutch comedian. One of his characters in his shows was the vagabond Dorus. He made two shows with musician Cor Steyn and several of their songs became well-known.

Cor Steyn (1906-1965) was a pianist and composer. After the conservatory he started to play the piano with silent movies. Later he wrote film music, worked for radio and television and accompanied many artists in their shows.

Manders sings the song 'Twee motten' (1956) with a clear Amsterdam accent, which places the character Dorus with the common people. In the song he uses wordplays and rhyming words. For example: 'cute moths' ('dotten van motten') rhymes, 'I spotted the holes' ('de gaten in de gaten') is a homonym, just as 'a moth has got to live' ('een mot toch leven mot'). Of course the whole content of the song is meant to be funny.
