Dutch song Rijk de Gooyer - Als ik bovenop de Dom sta
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

From the top of the Dom tower
I look down for a short while
I see the Old Town Canal
The Vreeburg, District C
Yes, my heart swells and bursts open
I am proud, what did you think
No city is more beautiful
Than Uterech my town
Than Uterech my town

As ik boven op de Dom kom
Kijk ik even naar benee
Dan zie 'k het Ouwe Grachie
Het Vreeburg en Wijk C
Ja, dan spring m'n hartsie open
Ik ben trots, wat dach-ie wat
D'r is geen mooier plekkie
As Uterech mijn stad
As Uterech mijn stad

They sing in our country:
'In our own Jordaan'
And 'To Den Bosch we're going'
And 'We all go to the Zaan'
But they do forget the best place
Of all, what a disgrace
There is such a thing as Utrech
Our country's core and heart

Ze zingen in ons landsjie
'Bij ons in de Jordaan'
Van 'Dat gaat naar Den Bosch toe'
En 'We gane naar de Zaan'
Maar het mooiste wordt vergeten
Dat is toch zeker schand
D'r is nog zoiets as Utrech
In 't hartsie van ons land

Look here, the central station
So many tracks we have
We have here the highest tower
It will sure blow you away
We also we have the Jaarbeurs
The Munt, the Crooked Rhine
And you will find the sweetest
Chickies here in Uterech

Kom op 't station es kijken
't Barst er van de rails
We hebben de hoogste toren
Heus, dat is iets crimineels
Dan hei je nog de Jaarbeurs
De Munt, de Kromme Rijn
En voor de mooiste grietsjies
Moet je ook in Utrech zijn

Rijk de Gooijer (1925-2011), stage name Gooyer, was a Dutch actor, singer and comedian. He started working as trainee reporter at a broadcasting studio. During a celebration evening of the staff, he performed a funny sketch. It made such a good impression, that his employers asked him to make radioprogramms as comedian and radio drama actor. He also performed in theatres, for example with news satiricus Wim Kan.

In 1952 he met comedian Johnny Kraaijkamp (1925-2011). Until 1992 they made, on and off, many comical theater and television shows as duo Johnny & Rijk. They also released many singles and records together.

One of the characters he played in the shows, was a man named Bartels. Bartels was born in Utrecht (like De Gooyer himself) and spoke with a heavy Utrecht city-dialect. Above song, he sang as Bartels, is still very well-known and beloved in Utrecht (as well as an alternative version of Utrecht singer Herman Berkien).

Words with a typical Utrecht accent in this song are for example: as (als), Uterech (Utrecht), hartsie (hartje) and landsjie (landje).

Several places, streets, squares and highlights of Utrecht are mentioned. The Dom tower (13th century, 112 meters high) is the hightest church tower of the Netherlands, and unique because it's freestanding, seperate from the church. The Vreeburg is a square, named after the former Vredenburg Castle at that spot. The Jaarbeurs is a big convention centre and the Royal Dutch Munt is the company that traditionally is responsible for the Dutch money.

The three mentioned songs are real Dutch songs. Two of them can even be found on this website with translation: 'In our own Jordaan' (about Amsterdam, in the province North-Holland) and 'To Den Bosch we're going' (about a city in the province Brabant).
