My choice is Amsterdam
Paris is not half as nice
My choice is Amsterdam
My Mokum's paradise
My choice is Amsterdam
With it's Amstel and the IJ
'Cause in Mokum I am rich
And content at the same time
My choice is Amsterdam

Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Dat is mooier dan Parijs
Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Mijn Mokums paradijs
Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Met zijn Amstel en het IJ
Want in Mokum ben ik rijk
En gelukkig tegelijk
Geef mij maar Amsterdam

Lately Jass Club Nine of Spades
They were in Paris for a week
To spend all the membership-fee money
Uncle Piet, the secretary
Had been studying for months
The French language all by himself
But when no one understood, he went nuts
He was singing on the Place Pigalle

Klaverjasclub ’Schoppen Negen’
Was een weekie in Parijs
Om de contributie te verteren
Ome Piet de secretaris
Had al maanden voor die tijd
In zijn eentje Frans zitten leren
Maar toen niemand hem verstond deed hij mal
Want hij zong op de Place Pigalle

On the great, high Eiffel tower
Baker almost lost his life
'Cause the height did really overwhelm him
If the butcher hadn't grabbed his
Stilt-long legs by accident
He had nevermore baked a bread roll
All in shock they hurried quick down the stairs
You could hear on the Champs Élysées

Rather in Mokum without cash
Than being millionaire in France
My choice is Amsterdam

Liever in Mokum zonder poen
Dan in Parijs met een miljoen
Geef mij maar Amsterdam

Johnny Jordaan (1924-1989), stage name of Johannes van Musscher, was a Dutch singer, famous for singing 'life songs' (levenslied), songs about the common people and the hardship of life. He was every inch an Amsterdammer, from the district the Jordaan. He sings with a clear Amsterdam accent.

The city of Amsterdam was and still is refered to as 'Mokum', the Hebrew word for 'city'. This originates from the many Jewish inhabitants Amsterdam had before the second world war. The Amstel is a river in North-Holland and flows right through Amsterdam (the historical dam in the Amstel gave Amsterdam, as medieval little fishing village, it's name). The IJ is nowadays part of the lake the IJsselmeer (original the Southern Sea) and here was the historical harbour of Amsterdam.

The Jordaan is a quarter (neighbourhood) in Amsterdam. It is known as a real working-class quarter ('volksbuurt') with small alleys and small houses; and popular for it's many café's, shops and markets.

In the 20th century, the neighbourhood the Jordaan had many singers, known for their easy recognizable 'life songs' ('levenslied') about the common people, the hardship of life, and the love for Amsterdam ('Mokum') and the Jordaan. Besides Johnny Jordaan for example: Willy Alberti, Manke Nelis and Tante Leen. They sang lamenting with whines and whimpers, with an Amsterdam accent, often accompanied by accordions.
