"Get off that roof top! Don't warn no more
No, no, no, no, no, no
Off that roof top! Don't warn no more
Get off that roof top! This was the very last time"

"Kom van dat dak af, 'k waarschuw niet meer
Nee, nee, nee, nee, nee, nee
Van dat dak af, 'k waarschuw niet meer
Kom van dat dak af, dat was de laatste keer"

Jan Jansen his wife she used to walk a tight rope
For a lack of a rope she climbed the roof of the porch
The food became cold and Jan Jansen turned hot
And through the street sounded his cry

Jan Jansen zijn vrouw was een koorddanseres
Bij gebrek aan een touw klom ze op het bordes
Het eten werd koud en Jan Jansen werd heet
En in de straat weerklonk zijn kreet

Jan Jansen was mad and said: "The fat is in fire!
Get off that roof or in the gutter you'll end!"
But his wife was real scared and was so desperate
Again sounded his cry

Jan Jansen werd kwaad en zei: "Aan is de boot
Kom van dat dak af of je gaat in de goot"
Maar zijn vrouw schrok zich wild en was ten einde raad
Weer klonk het in de straat

Peter Koelewijn (1940) is a Dutch singer, producer and radio-dj. He was the first to introduce rock-and-roll in the Dutch language. This song, 'Kom van dat dak af' (1959), became an instant hit in both the Netherlands and Belgium.

The text refers to a joke Peter's older brothers used to make as children. On the street, they called 'Hey... héy!' behind someones back. When the passer-by turned around to see what was going on, they looked to the roof tops, as if something was happening there.

Peter Koelewijn wrote the lyrics and music the night before the recording session and the band rehearsed the music in the train towards the studio.

Later hits of Koelewijn are for example 'If I were God'/'Als ik God was' ('KL 204', 1978), about a loved one who died in a plain crash; and 'You become older dad'/'Je wordt ouder papa' (1977, written by Carrack/Anthony). He also wrote 'Straight standing in the wind'/'Rechtop in de wind' (1987) for Marga Bult, who ended 6th with it on the Eurovision Song Contest 1987.
