Dutch song De Selvera's - De postkoets
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

Years ago in these lands, there was a handsome postman
Riding the stage coach, he was proud and smart
Cupid, laughing content, saw very many chances
Feeling so pleased 'cause he won many hearts
Mountain high, valley deep, sounded the horn so loud
It was a joyful sign for all of us

All girls glanced at the stage coach and it's handsome postman
Which of those longing girls would win his heart

Meisjes richtten hun blikken naar de dilligence
Wie van hen won die knappe postiljon

Drawn to a sweet girl, blushing and blond
He dared to ask her to marry him, to wed him
And she did answer clearly and quick
That she did want to share her life with him

Mountain high, valley deep, sounded the call so loud
"Long live the bride and groom" heared everywhere

They got many red roses as a wedding present
With the best wishes from the villagers
Hand in hand with the woman of his dreams he left there
Drove to the future, to their happiness
Mountain high, valley deep, sounded the horn so loud
Now as a sign for all to celebrate

De Selvera's (1954-1965) was a Dutch duo of two singing sisters, Mieke and Selma Jansen. Mieke's earlier stage name had been 'Vera' and a combination of the names Selma and Vera became 'Selvera's'. They also sang in German, English and in the Limburgish region language.

Above song 'The stage coach'/'De postkoets' (1957) was their biggest hit. They won a Platinum Album with it, the first ever in the Netherlands. In 1983 the pop band The Cats released an English cover of the song, which ment a comeback for them.

Other big hits of De Selvera's are for example: 'Two fawn-coloured eyes'/'Twee reebruine ogen' (1956) and 'Well little deer'/'Zeg kleine ree' (1959).

Ferry van Delden (1892-1965) was a well-known lyricist. He wrote for artists like Willy Derby, Lou Bandy, Dorus and De Selvera's. He is said to have written about 7000 songs. In 1962 he received a Golden Harp (the first that was ever awarded) for his complete oeuvre.
