Dutch song Rudi Carrell - Wat een geluk
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

It's such a luck I am a little part of this big world
I know the tunes of siskins, blackbirds and the other birds
I can take part of everything that lives
And I can breathe along with everything that breathes

Wat een geluk dat ik een stukje van de wereld ben
Dat ik de wijsjes van de sijsjes en de merels ken
En dat ik mee mag doen met al wat leeft
En mee mag ademen met al wat adem heeft

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

I am so glad that daffodils will blossom every May
That fruits and butterflies and foals and birds and fish exists
And all this joy is beginning with you
Because I love you so much that I can't be cured

Ik ben zo blij dat er in mei altijd narcissen zijn
En dat er vruchten, vlinders, veulens, vogels, vissen zijn
En al die blijdschap komt enkel door jou
Omdat ik vreselijk, ongeneeslijk van je hou

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

Is this corny? Well, if you ask me straight
I say "yes", but I keep talking anyway
Ah, what should I do, 'cause I love you so
And the simple fact is I can't find the words

Als je mij nou vraagt, is dat afgezaagd
Zeg ik "ja", maar ik zaag toch nog even door
Ach, wat moet ik nou, want ik hou van jou
En daar heb ik doodgewoon geen woorden voor

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

I only have the trusted sentence: 'dear, I love you so'
And 'darling, I'm in love' and the old words: 'stay faithfull, please'
Yes, it is primitive, I do agree
But what's the reason that you're so sweet

Ik heb alleen maar het vertrouwde: 'schat ik hou van jou'
Het 'hartedief, ik heb je lief' en het ouwe: 'blijf me trouw'
Ik vind het zelf ook wel erg primitief
Maar waarom ben je dan ook zo lief

Rudi Carrell (1934-2006), stage name of Rudolf Kesselaar, was a singer, actor and tv host. He primarily had a career in Germany.

His father André Carrell also was an actor and made comical shows for the theatre. Rudi Carrell replaced him sometimes and then was asked for a comical show on the radio. In 1959 he switched to television and got his own television programme: the Rudi Carrell Show (1961-1968). For this show he received both the Nipkow Disc and the Silver Rose of Montreux.

From 1965 onward he was very successful in Germany for 40 years. He continuously made (comical) television shows, until 2005. He was both in the Netherlands and in Germany honoured for his contribution to the improvement of the Dutch-German relations (Bundesverdienstkreuz in 1985, Dutch royal Ribbon of Honour in 2001).

The song 'It's such a luck'/'Wat een geluk' he sang at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960. Unfortunately, due to technical problems, he sang a part of the song false and ended second last. However, it became a hit in the Netherlands anyway (place nine in the hit parade). The song not only has a cheerful and jazzy melody, but the text is also full of internal rhyme (rhyme within the line), alliteration and word plays.

Other more or less well-known songs are: 'A little balloon'/'Een ballonnetje', 'A mouse in a mill'/'Een muis in een molen', 'It's high time'/'De hoogste tijd' en 'A little stroll together'/'Samen een straatje om'.

In 2005 Rudi Carrell was diagnosed with lung cancer - he always had been a heavy smoker. He died in 2006, 71 years old. In 2007 his statue, a bust, was revealed in Alkmaar, the city where he was born.
