Dutch song Wim Sonneveld - Het dorp
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

I have a postcard still at home
That shows a church, a horse with cart
A butcher called 'J. van der Ven'
A pub, a lady on a bike
It doesn't mean a thing to you
But in this village I was born
This village, I remember well
The farmer's children in the school
A cart that rattles on the cobbles
The town hall with the water pump
A sand road winding through the corn
The farmhouses, the livestock

And in the garden of my father
I saw the trees along the path
I was a child, didn't know better
Than that it sure would never end

They lived so simple in those days
In modest houses between fields
With farmer's flowers and a hedge
But evidently they were wrong
The village now is modernised
And they all are now on the right track
Well see, how rich their life can be
They watch some quizes on TV
And live in ugly concrete boxes
With all this window glass that shows
How nice Mien's new bought couches look
And her buffet with plastic roses

The village youth just hangs around
With miniskirt and beatle-hair
And shout along with their beat songs
I know that they have every right
It's a new era, you are right
But I feel such melancholy
I knew their dads when they were young
They bought liquorice for a cent
I saw their mothers skip the rope then
That village old came to an end
And all that there is left for me
Are just some memories, a postcard

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

When I saw the high trees of my father
Still there along his garden path
I was a child, how could I have known
That everything would end for good

Wim Sonneveld (1917-1974) was a Dutch cabaret artist and singer. He is considered to be one of the 'Great Three' of Dutch cabaret (with Toon Hermans and Wim Kan). In the Netherlands, 'cabaret' is a kind of theatre in which someone, usually in a one man show, tells a story or series of anecdotes (personal or critical about politics/society or just hilarious) with jokes and songs.

Some of his most beloved songs are Marjolijne and 'Margootje' (both by Annie M.G. Schmidt); and 'Along the canals of Amsterdam'/'Aan de Amsterdamse grachten' (by Pieter Goemans). The linked songs are also translated and included on this website.

Friso Wiegersma (1925-2006) was a Dutch painter and writer. He made set decorations for shows of Wim Sonneveld. He later wrote songs for Sonneveld and for other artists, like Leen Jongewaard and Willy Alberti.

Wiegersma and Sonneveld had a relationship since the 1940's and although this was known in the theater world, it never became public. They were together until Sonneveld's too early death in 1974.

The song 'The village'/'Het dorp' (1966) was a very free adaptation of the French song 'La montagne' by Jean Ferrat. The sentence 'And along the garden path of my father' refers to the garden of Friso Wiegersma's parents in Deurne (North-Brabant). Nowadays the house is a museum and the path along the garden is re-named: 'Garden path of my father'.
