Dutch song André Hazes - De vlieger
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

My son did have his birthday, he is eight years old, my love
He asked me for a kite, of course, he did get one from me
And his ball, his bike, his toy trains, he just never gave a look
'Cause his kite now ment the whole world to him, why, I didn't know

And then, another morning, he said: "Father, come with me
The wind is getting stronger, so I take my kite with me"
In one hand he held a letter, in his other hand the kite
I didn't understand it, but my dear son said to me:

En toen, de and're morgen, zei hij: "Vader, ga je mee
De wind die is nu gunstig, dus ik neem m'n vlieger mee
In z'n ene hand de vlieger, in z'n andere een brief
Ik kon hem niet begrijpen, maar toen zei m'n zoontje lief:

"This letter I wrote to my mother
In heaven, high up in the sky
This letter I'll tie to my kite-line
And send it to her, I miss her so
And then she can read how much I love her still
And that I can't get used to that stepmother
This letter I wrote to my mother
In heaven, high up in the sky"

"Ik heb hier een brief voor m'n moeder
Die hoog in de hemel is
Deze brief bind ik vast aan m'n vlieger
Tot zij hem ontvangt, zij die ik mis
En als zij dan leest hoeveel ik van haar hou
Dat ik niet kan wennen aan die andere vrouw
Ik heb hier een brief voor m'n moeder
Die hoog in de hemel is"

André Hazes (1951-2004) was an Amsterdam 'volkszanger' (singer for the common people) and is considered to be one of the best writers and interpreters of the 'life song' (levenslied): songs about the common people and the problems, misery and hardship of daily life. This is usually sung lamenting with whines and whimpers, with an Amsterdam accent, often accompanied by accordions.

His biggest hits are for example 'Lonely Christmas'/'Eenzame kerst' (1976); 'A little in love'/'Een beetje verliefd' (1981); 'Not another word'/'Zeg maar niets meer' (1982) 'Blood, sweat and tears'/'Bloed, zweet en tranen' (1985); 'We love Orange (the national football team)'/'Wij houden van Oranje' (1988), and 'She believes in me'/'Zij gelooft in mij' (2004).

During his career he released 36 albums. Also translated on this website: Give me your fears (1983); and My small boy (1990).

André Hazes was very popular with the common people, but not appreciated (at all) by the more upper class/educated people. This changed at the end of his life, in 1999, after a documantary about his life that was a big success in the movie theatres. He became more and more a singer for all people and his older hits had nostalgic value for everyone who grew up with it.

Since 2004 Hazes had problems with noise in his ear and deafness, a disaster for his music career. His farewell-concert in the Amsterdam ArenA after his death in 2004 was life on television and got extreme high ratings. His songs were sung by artists like Guus Meeuwis, René Froger, Paul de Leeuw and Xander de Buisonjé; Johan Cruijff made a speech.

Later a musical was made about his life, He believes in me/Hij gelooft in mij (2012-2015). Partly based on this musical a movie was made, Blood, sweat and tears/Bloed, zweet en tranen (2015). His youngest son André Hazes jr. later had hits like 'Hey, old man' (2016).
