It's a few years ago now, on a hitch-hike journey
It was around midnight, rain was pouring down
With a sleeping-bag I borrowed, nothing but my passport
Somewhere at the E7 or E8

I just was fed up with the urban life, the city
I lingered aimless through the days in search for happiness
Tried to leave a girlfriend whom I had never cared for really
At last that night a truck stopped, gave me a ride

And in a glimmer moonlight I saw his eyes, so strangely
He asked me who I was and what I did and what I thought
And bending on his wheel, he just stared in the darkness
No word about our destination that night

He gave me a rollie and said: "I'm Silent Willie
I always can find lodging, they all know my name
And my truck tires know the roads all through the wide world"
And when he stopped he pointed out where I had to go

'k Vind altijd onderkomen, ieder kent mijn naam

"Well over there, that crossroad of those two lonely main roads
Right between the farmlands, you will find a pub
And no truck driver ever is unwelcome
You never are too much, you always do belong"

He said: "Go over there and drink a half pint, I am paying"
And suddenly he put ten guilders in my hand
"And send them the beste wishes", he said, "from Silent Willie
Then you'll be surely welcome, they'll treat you as guest"

I opened the pub door and I ordered there a half pint
The room was full of men and smoke and beer and buzzing noise
But right when I payed them and mentioned Silent Willie
It became silent in the room

The barman said: "It happened fifteen years ago now
A bus drove through the mountains, dead straight towards Willie's truck
And paying with his own life, he could prevent disaster
He still sends unexpected greetings now and then"

The BB Band or Bill Bradley Band (1976-1982) was a Dutch cover band from Den Bosch. They wrote also some own songs, for example 'I am not a dreamer anymore' (written by Kees Buenen).

They got some more success when singer-songwriter Nadieh (Karin Meis) joined the group. They released some songs in Dutch, including their biggest hit 'Silent Willie'/'Stille Willie' (1981), sung by Alfred Martens.

The story in the song 'Stille Willie' (1981) is roughly known in other popsongs, like 'Big Joe and Phantom 309' (by Red Sovine, 1967; and later by Tom Waits). It is based on a folk song or folk story about a hitchhiker who meets a truck driver who helps him on his way, but who later appears to be death already and gave his life in a heroic way.
