Someone said: "This is Annabel
She has to catch the last train
Please take your car and she'll make it in time"
I said: "All right" and drove as bad as I could
So we arrived at a quiet platform
And I said: "You've bad luck today"
Soon the last train coach disappeard far away
And Annabel said: "Okay, I'll come to your place"

Iemand zei: "Dit is Annabel

And later we laid together
As the phrase goes, a little tired but content
The daylight shone through the windows
She said: "I'm in a hurry, no breakfast for me"
I just said: "See you, goodbye Annabel"
And I thought: "I'll never see you again"
I thought: "I'll turn around and sleep a few more hours"
But two hours later I was still wide awake, laid on my back

Annabel, not a chance without you, Annabel
Annabel, not a chance without you, Annabel

Annabel, het wordt niets zonder jou, Annabel
Annabel, het wordt niets zonder jou, Annabel

Like this I laid two more days in my bed
I was mixed up and in shock
Then I got up, I had to act, not to think
'Cause without her I felt so worthless and bad
I searched the town, hoping just for a glimpse
And I thought: "I'll never see you again"
I even catched myself thinking aloud
And someone said: "You stood on the brigde for hours leaning on the balustrade"

And then one night I saw her again
She just stepped into a tram
She even looked more pretty than the last time
I called her name and hit the brakes really hard
I jumped right out the car and grabbed her arm
She stood still and looked back
She saw me, but she was hardly surprised
I said: "Hey, where're you heading to", she said: "Station again"

Once there she bought a ticket Paris, one-way
I said: "Yes, one for me, too"
The ticket clerk gave us our tickets to France
And Annabel glanced shortly at me
I said: "I finally found you today
Don't want to lose you again
Whether you go to Barcelona or Prague
Or travel on to the end of the world, I will join you for good, hey"

En Annabel keek even opzij

Hans de Booij (1958) is a Dutch singer and songwriter. He worked as a light technician for the shows of Boudewijn de Groot. De Booij had several hits in the 1980's.

In 1983 he released his first album, but the three biggest hits were not written by himself, but by others: 'Annabel'; 'A woman like you'/'Een vrouw zoals jij'; and 'Being home'/'Thuis ben' were written/re-written by Herman Pieter de Boer and composed by Boudewijn de Groot. After this, Hans de Booij had just one more hit ('I love all women'/'Ik hou van alle vrouwen', 1986) although he released more albums, like Emocratie (2007).

The above song 'Annabel' (1983) was in the National Hit Parade Top 40 for twelve weeks and is still voted every year into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year). De Booij claims that he cannot sing 'Annabel' anymore, because he starts to hyperventilate. Even so, he named his dog Annabel.

Herman Pieter de Boer (1928-2014) was a Dutch writer and lyrics writer. His most well-known songs are: 'Let me'/'Laat Me' (for Ramses Shaffy); 'Visitors'/'Visite' (for Lenny Kuhr); Annabel (for Hans de Booij); 'On a uninhabited island'/'Op een onbewoond eiland' and 'I dreamed so extremely insane tonight'/'Ik heb zo waanzinnig gedroomd' (for national teenagers choir Children for Children).

Boudewijn de Groot (1944) is one of Netherlands's most famous singers, songwriters and composers. He is most known for his own records and many hits, but he also produced and wrote for other artists. Some songs of his hand, translated and included on this website, are: 'Testament' (1966); 'Drowned butterfly'/'Verdronken vlinder' (1966); 'Eva' (1968); 'Prikkebeen' (1968); and 'Evening'/'Avond' (1997).
