Dutch song Hé Amsterdam - Drukwerk
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

I have been born as Amsterdammer
On the backside of the Bloemgracht
Lying in your bed you could hear
Your neighbour quarreling at night

Ik ben in Amsterdam geboren
Drie hoog achter op de Bloemgracht
Waar je in je nest kon horen
Als buurman heilie maakte 's nachs

The streets were really perfect playground
We sauntered through the inner town
And we did believe in sharing fairly
Swiped some apples at the market

De straten waren om te spelen
We zwierven door de hele stad
We geloofden nog in eerlijk delen
Jatten appels op de markt

Hey Amsterdam
You've changed over the years, they're saying
Hey Amsterdam
You're disappointing now
But those complainers
Are no Amsterdammers
'Cause, Amsterdam
You're just like the old days

Hé Amsterdam
Ze zeggen dat je bent veranderd
Hé Amsterdam
Je kan geen goed meer doen
Maar wie dat zegt
Die is geen Amsterdammer
Want Amsterdam
Je bent nog net als toen

Returning after all those years here
They're telling me: "Mokum, that is dead"
But really, I do not believe those stories
Now I am walking through the town

En kom je terug na heel wat jaren
Dan zeggen ze "Mokum, dat is dood"
Maar ik geloofde niks van die verhalen
Als ik zo door de stad heen loop

The market traders are still quibbling
The Nieuwe Dijk, still busy too
A little boy is swiping apples
No, Amsterdam will never change

De kooplui staan nog steeds te katten
De Nieuwe Dijk drukker dan ooit
Ik zie een jochie appels jatten
Nee, Amsterdam verandert nooit

On Sunday to the red light district
We were just slowly walking back and forth
Going easy we all youngsters
We passed the Stoofsteeg ten more times

Op zondagmiddag naar de wallen
En als je langzaam liep dan zag je meer
Onopvallend met z'n allen
De Stoofsteeg tien keer op en neer

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

And Sunday night we liked some fighting
We didn't care which enemy
Until policemen came to dive in
And then we fought against police

En zondagavond was het knokken
Het hinderde niet tegen wie
Tot de politie dan kwam fokken
Dan vochten we wel tegen die

That drunk guy lying on our doorstep
And my mom was too afraid to go
When dad asked if he was sickly
He said: "Oh no, I'm only tired"

Die dronken vent die in 't portiek lag
En m'n ma die dorst niet naar 'm toe
Toen pa vroeg of-ie soms ziek was
Zei die: "Nou nee, alleen maar moe"

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

So not so much has changed at all here
Junkies lie on doorsteps now
And next to me an Amsterdammer
Asks: "Well, is he just tired, or is he ill?"

Dus zoveel is er niet veranderd
Junkie ligt nu in 't portiek
En naast me vraagt een Amsterdammer:
"Hé Har, is-ie nou moe, of is-ie ziek?"

'Cause all those strangers, junkies riots
They just don't frighten us a bit
The people tell us so much nonsense
It all belongs to Amsterdam

Want vreemdelingen, junkies-rellen
Ons maken ze ermee niet bang
Ze kunnen ons nog meer vertellen
't Hoort allemaal bij Amsterdam

Drukwerk (1978-1990) was a Dutch 'Nederpop'-band ('Netherpop'). This word refers to the sudden growth of Dutch language pop music in the Netherlands in the eighties (with bands like Doe Maar, Het Goede Doel, Klein Orkest, Frank Boeijen Group and Toontje Lager). The lead singer was Harry Slinger.

The band started making songs as protest against the closure of a youth center in Amsterdam. In 1981 they scored a big number one hit with the song 'You lied to me'/'Je loog tegen mij'. Other hits were 'How foolish'/'Wat dom' (1982) and 'Little Marian'/'Marianneke' (1983). They released over 10 albums.

Harry Slinger (1949) was born in Amsterdam, at the Bloemgracht ('flower canal'). As singer he became known for his red hat, which became his trademark. In the nineties, Slinger began a solo career. From 2012 onward, he performs again under the name Drukwerk, but with other musicians.
