Dutch song Karin Bloemen - Geen kind meer
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

You're living your own life now, and don't care what she thinks
You've grown up for a long time, but you still are her child
You sure want to discuss it, but not the way she wants
And maybe you did grieve her, but never out of joy
What do authority as parent and those ties still mean
Then suddenly that unexpected day

The gloomy day your mother dies and lets you go for ever
And you inherit all her habits, that you always hated
Her sharp tongue and her surliness, the sour smart-alec
Perhaps those traits will very soon be recognized in you
But hopefully then the other side too, she was mild and friendly
But whether you inherited those too, that is a question
From that day onward only things as time and pain remain
The last day you will ever be a child

All that went wrong for years can no longer turn out right
The words that are unspoken, remain unsaid for good
Your feelings of affection that you failed to express
And that you didn't blame her and that you have regrets
The things you couldn't say for years and didn't want to say
And now wished you could say them one last time

The gloomy day your mother dies, the day that will be painting
The days to come more bleak and grey, although you're not complaining
Of course you still have your good friends, they're very close as well
And if you want a boyfriend then you only have to choose
But no one now remembers how you loved your doll and playing
And no one now will share your early past with you anymore
From that day onward you're no longer vulnerable and small
The last day you will ever be a child

Karin Bloemen (1960) is a singer, actress and cabaret artist. In the Netherlands, 'cabaret' is a kind of theatre in which someone, usually in a one man/woman show, tells a story or series of anecdotes (personal or critical about politics/society or just hilarious) with jokes and songs.

Karin Bloemen is known for her enormous dresses, hairstyles, her clear voice and her extravert personality and is called the 'Dutch diva' or 'La Bloemen'. In the theatre she has been very open about the difficulties in her personal life, for example about the sexual abuse she suffered as a child, the death of her sister, the following care for her nephew (she has two children of her own), her burnout and the struggles with her weight.

Karin Bloemen made over 20 theatre shows and released over 10 albums. She won a Golden Harp (1994) and an Edison Music Award (1994).

The song 'No longer a child'/'Geen kind meer' (1997) was written by poet and lyricist Jan Boerstoel (1944). He wrote for many artists, like Martine Bijl, Gerard Cox, Jenny Arean, Adèle Bloemendaal, Frans Halsema, Youp van 't Hek and Jasperina de Jong. He also wrote lyrics for the national children's choir Children for children/Kinderen voor kinderen.

The music of the song 'No longer a child'/'Geen kind meer' was written by guitarist and composer Marnix Busstra, who is married to Karin Bloemen. The song was awarded with the Annie M.G. Schmidt Award. Still every year it is voted in the Top 2000, traditionally aired on the radio in the last week of the year.
