Dutch song Piet Brakman - Waar vind je een land
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

No other land has it's polders next to the beach
In this low land you can see each church spire from the dike
This countryside always has an other side
Every isle a language of it's own
In Zealand you have everything

Waar vind je een land met de polders vlak achter 't strand
En waar je vanaf de dijk van elk dorp de toren ziet
Waar vind je een land met altijd een overkant
Met elk eiland, streek zijn eigen taal
Dat heb je in Zeeland allemaal

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

Many Zealander left this land, old and young
Very soon though they all long
For the polders, the sea and the beach

Elke Zeeuw die gong, rijk of arm, oud of jong
't Duurt niet lang, of je verlangt
Naar de polders, de zee en het strand

This happened to me, too, I left when I was just eighteen
The kids used words like: 'our dad', 'our mum' and 'houdoe'
But came back with us to De Groe

Zo is 't mij ook vergaan: op m'n achttiende weggegaan
De kinders leerden: 'ons pap', 'ons mam' en 'houdoe'
Maar kwamen mee terug naar De Groe

So many people left, tried to find a better life
And many did well elsewhere, but even so
The time will come once to return

Zo velen bin gegaan, zochten elders een bestaan
Maar toch hoe goed het de rest ook is vergaan
Er kwam een tijd om terug te gaan

Piet Brakman (1945) is a Dutch musical teacher and therapist, songwriter and singer from the province of Zealand. He moved to the province of Brabant in the 1970's, where he (beside his job as musical therapist) worked for a music company (Telstar). In the 1980's he returned to Zealand with his wife and children and settled in the village Groede (in the south of Zealand: Zeeuws-Vlaanderen). Brakman released over 15 LP's and CD's.

Brakman sings in a Zealandic dialect (more precise: Zealandic Flemish). The province Zealand/Zeeland, in the south-west of the Netherlands, consists of six (former) islands and peninsulas (nowadays connected to the provinces Holland and Brabant). It's situated in the delta of the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt and it's famous for it's Delta Works.

The Zealandic region languages are a group of Frisian-Franconian languages. On every (former) island, the language is (a bit or even quite) different. So no less than 12 Zealandic dialects are distinguished.

Above song is especially about the most southern part of Zealand: Zealandic Flanders/Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. This area is only connected to Flanders in Belgium. From the Netherlands it's only reachable through a tunnel or by ferryboat. See more detailed map of the province of Zealand (with Zealandic Flanders in the south).

The above song is about the phenomenon that many people in Zealand move to other provinces to find a job - but many return after a shorter or longer period of time. Piet Brakman himself lived in Brabant for many years. His children even used typical Brabantian words (like 'houdoe'/goodbye and 'ons pap'/'us dad'). But in the end, he returns with his wife and children to the village Groede (or: De Groe) in Zealandic Flanders.

After his return to Zealand, Piet Brakman founded a musical publishing company in the village Breskens, not far from his home town Groede.
