with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
I would like to know the reason
Why mountains rise high in the sky
Perhaps to collect all the snow fall
Or to shield the deep valley from cold air
Or perhaps they are pillars that carry the heaven's arch
That's the reason mountains are high
I would like to know the reason
Why oceans are so very deep
Perhaps so the fish will be happy
They can't do very well without water
Or perhaps to the glory of God who created earth
That's the reason oceans are deep
I would like to know the reason
Why clouds move so fast through the sky
Perhaps it is a lesson to mankind
Telling us borders are illusions
But it also could be just an elegant angels play
That's the reason clouds move so fast
I would like to know the reason
Why most of the people are tired
Perhaps 'cause they're hasty and hurried
Or because they have thousands of questions
And for such a long time they have been on their way to peace
That's the reason people are tired

Jules de Corte (1924-1996) was a Dutch singer-songwriter and pianist. He became blind as a two-year-old child and learned to play the piano in the school for the blind.
After his school-years he became organist in a church, gave piano lessons and played the piano at parties and weddings. In 1946 he started to play the piano on the radio, in shows like The clock strikes nine/Negen heit de Klok.
In the years 1945-1985 De Corte wrote hundreds of songs, performed on the radio, made successful theatre shows and wrote several books. In 1955 he released his first record, The birds/De vogels. The accompanying single with above song, was awarded with a Golden Record.

He released over 30 albums, like The very few people/De enkeling (1964), For who wants to hear it/Voor wie luisteren wil (1971) and In a frame/Ingelijst (1990). Jules de Corte is both praised for his poetic lyrics and his to the point formulated philosophical thoughts, as well as for his recognizable music that neatly matches the content of the song.
Recurring themes are love, happiness/bliss, the earth and the individual human being, loneliness and human proportions. His most famous song, 'I would like to know the reason' (1955), was covered by many artists, like Martine Bijl, Willeke Alberti, Ruth Jacott and Paul de Leeuw.
Jules de Corte was awarded with the Visser Neerlandia Award, the Louis Davids Award, a Golden Harp and an Edison Award. He married two times and had six children.
