Dutch song Ede Staal - 't Hogelaand
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
It is the sky behind Uithuizen
The tower of the village Spijk
It is the road from Leens to Klooster
And through Westpolder past the dike
't Is de lucht achter Oethoezen
't Is 't torentje van Spiek
't Is de weg van Lains noar Klooster
En deur Westpolder langs de diek
It are the windmills and the canals
It are the churches and the strongholds
It is the land where as a child
I had no clue of pain and worries
't Binnen de meulens en de moaren
't Binnen de kerken en de börgen
't Is 't laand woar ik as kind
Nog niks begreep van pien of zörgen
That is my land, my Hogeland
Dat is mien laand, mien Hogelaand
It is the sky behind Uithuizen
The tower of the village Spijk
It is the road from Leens to Klooster
And through Westpolder past the dike
't Is de lucht achter Oethoezen
't Is 't torentje van Spiek
't Is de weg van Lains noar Klooster
En deur Westpolder langs de diek
It are the windmills and the canals
It are the churches and the strongholds
It is the land where as a child
I had no clue of pain and worries
't Binnen de meulens en de moaren
't Binnen de kerken en de börgen
't Is 't laand woar ik as kind
Nog niks begreep van pien of zörgen
It are the windmills, it are the strongholds
't Binnen de meulens, 't binnen de börgen
It is a pigeon house, a main street
It is a bakery that's old
It are the farmlands and the farmsteads
Near Warffum, Usquert, and near Mij
't Is 'n doevetil, n dörpsstroat
't Is 'n olde bakkerij
't Binnen de grote boerenploatsen
Van Waarvum, Oskerd, zo noar Mij
It is the wheat, it are the oat fields
It is the rapeseed in full bloom
It's the horizon behind Ronum
After a thunderstorm
't Is de waait, 't is de hoaver
't Is t koolzoad in de blui
't Is de horizon bie Roanum
Vlak noa 'n dunderbui
That is my land, my Hogeland
Dat is mien laand, mien Hogelaand
It is in May a sultry evening
A mooing cow stares at the grass
I have a romance for the first time
And feel the sparkles of your hand
't Is n mooie oavend in maai
'n Kou houst doeknekt in 't gruinlaand
Ik heb veur d'eerste moal verkeren
En vuil de vonken van dien haand
And all the smashing plans I had
Will never happen in the end
Until the Hogeland lays down
The dark cloth of the night on us
De wilde plannen dij ik haar
Komt sikkom niks meer van terecht
Totdat de nacht van 't Hogelaand
'n Donker klaid over ons legt
That is my land, my Hogeland
Dat is mien laand, mien Hogelaand

Ede Staal (1941-1986) was teacher English, poet and singer-songwriter from the province of Groningen (in the north of the Netherlands). He wrote and sang in the Gronings region language (before also: Gronings dialect). This is the Low Saxon or West Low German language.
In the 1980's Ede Staal released several singles and an album, My sound/Mien toentje (1984). His songs were enormous successful. He seldom performed on stage, because he didn't like to be in the spotlights. He prepared a second record, that would be released in 1986.
However, in 1985 he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died in July 1986, only 44 years old. The second album, If four words/As vaaier woorden (1986) was published posthumous.

Still, Ede Staal is considered as the most famous singer of Groningen songs. Some of the most beloved songs (beside above song) are: 'The times have often been so dark'/''t Het nog nooit zo donker west', 'If four words'/'As vaaier woorden', 'Motto - my existence'/'Credo - mien bestoan' and 'My potato fields are blooming'/'Doar bluit mien eerappellaand'.
His songs are known for their poetic lyrics, melancholic sound, the praise of the Groningen country side, descriptions of ordinary life, sometimes with a little humor, sometimes with some serious contemplations. The word Hogeland ('high land') refers to a region in the north of the province of Groningen, along the Wadden Sea (it is indeed a littebit higher, because of the sedimentation of sea clay).
In 2000 a statue was placed in his honour in Delfzijl (with four lines of a songtext). In 2011 (25 years after his death) a statue (a bust) of Ede Staal was revealed in the office of radio- and television company RTV Noord in Groningen. Several books about his life and songs were published and several television documentaries were made.
