Ede Staal (1941-1986) was teacher English, poet and singer-songwriter from the province of Groningen (in the north of the Netherlands). He wrote and sang in the Gronings region language (before also: Gronings dialect). This is the Low Saxon or West Low German language.
In the 1980's Ede Staal released several singles and an album, My sound/Mien toentje (1984). His songs were enormous successful. He seldom performed on stage, because he didn't like to be in the spotlights. He prepared a second record, that would be released in 1986.
However, in 1985 he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died in July 1986, only 44 years old. The second album, If four words/As vaaier woorden (1986) was published posthumous.

Still, Ede Staal is considered as the most famous singer of Groningen songs. Some of the most beloved songs (beside above song) are: 'The times have often been so dark'/''t Het nog nooit zo donker west', 'If four words'/'As vaaier woorden', 'Motto - my existence'/'Credo - mien bestoan' and 'My potato fields are blooming'/'Doar bluit mien eerappellaand'.
His songs are known for their poetic lyrics, melancholic sound, the praise of the Groningen country side, descriptions of ordinary life, sometimes with a little humor, sometimes with some serious contemplations. The word Hogeland ('high land') refers to a region in the north of the province of Groningen, along the Wadden Sea (it is indeed a littebit higher, because of the sedimentation of sea clay).
In 2000 a statue was placed in his honour in Delfzijl (with four lines of a songtext). In 2011 (25 years after his death) a statue (a bust) of Ede Staal was revealed in the office of radio- and television company RTV Noord in Groningen. Several books about his life and songs were published and several television documentaries were made.
