Louis Davids (1883-1939) was a Rotterdam revue star and singer. His jewish parents had a pub in Rotterdam, but also sang as a duo. They had four children. Louis Davids sang at fairs and elsewhere in Rotterdam since he was eight years old, often together with his sister Rika.
When he was 13, he went to England as pupil of a magician for a year. Afterwards he became successful in the theatre with Rika, with songs like 'We go to Zandvoort at the seaside'/'We gaan naar Zandvoort aan de zee' (1915) and above song (1906). In Amsterdam, Louis Davids made revue shows as he had seen them in England. His sister was married in the meantime, so he formed a duo with his younger sister Heintje Davids. She also became very popular.
Louis Davids played as actor in the silent movie The Tars/De Jantjes (1922) and later in the remake, a sound film (1934). Davids also started to sing Amsterdam levensliederen ('lifesongs') from the Jordaan, although he was a Rotterdamer.

Some of his most well-known songs are: 'The common man'/'De kleine man'; 'To the bulb fields'/'Naar de bollen'; 'Who is born for a dime'/'Als je voor een dubbeltje geboren bent'; and 'In the Jordaan'/'In de Jordaan'. Many songs were written by songwriter and lyricist Jacques van Tol (1897-1969). He also wrote for artists like Willy Derby, Lou Bandy and Fien de la Mar.
The music of the song 'A boattrip on the Rhine'/'Een reisje langs de Rijn' (1906) was written by German composer Paul Lincke for the German operetta Lady Luna/Frau Luna (1899). The first line said: 'Das macht die Berliner luft, luft, luft'. Louis Davids didn't translate the song, but wrote a new songtext on the melody. The song was later covered by artists like Willy and Willeke Alberti (1969), making the song again a hit (link opens youtube).
In 1937 Louis Davids had to end his work in the theatres, because of severe asthma. He died two years later as a result of this disease, only 55 years old. Rika Davids died in a Nazi concentration camp. Heintje Davids went into hiding during World War II (1940-45) and was the only survivor of the family.
