After the Second World War, Bert van Dongen played in the Heintje Davids Revue. Heintje Davids was a very beloved singer, for example known for the song 'Because I love you really much'/'Omdat ik zoveel van je hou' (1934). In the seventies Van Dongen was the host of the famous television show Bring us a little sun/Breng eens een zonnetje, with old songs.
The above song 'Next to that windmill'/'Daar bij die molen' was covered by many singers, like Willy Derby (1936), Herman Emmink (1959), Max van Praag & Willy Alberti (1960), Johnny Hoes (1965), André van Duin (1979) and De Havenzangers (1981). Because of this, the song remained famous over the decades.
