with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
You're not good-looking, not a pretty girl
Your nails are black and dirty all the time
I'll never care though for another
Because I love you really much
And even though your ancestry is strange
I'm very pleased with you in any case
I never will care for another
Because I love you really much
What a grief, you've not the looks
Specially quarreling
Wat verdriet, mooi ben je niet
Vooral wanneer je kijft
No good looks, but
Beauty decays
But ugliness remains, you know
Get used to it, I tell you
Al ben 'k geen plaat
Schoonheid vergaat
Maar weet: de lelijkheid die blijft
Daar moet je maar aan wennen
And even though you wear no satin clothes
And have no diet to get thin and slim
I'll never care though for another
Because I love you really much
You have no permanent wave in your hair
And using soap is for most part unknown
I wouldn't change you for another
Not for a skinny model girl
Your ugly monkey-like face isn't shaved
A decent person needs time to get used
I wouldn't change you for another
Because I love you really much
Joy and grief, as you know
We shared together years
Lief en leed, zoals je weet
Tezamen deelden wij
The joy, my wife
That was for you
And all the grief that was for me
You surely always knew that
Although you often left me in the lurch
And you did often beat me black and blue
Only Grim Reaper can divide us
Because I love you really much

Heintje Davids (1888-1975), short for Henriëtte Davids, was a comedian, revue artist and singer from Rotterdam. Her jewish parents had a pub in Rotterdam, but also sang as a duo. Her three siblings had an act as Family Theatre Davids/Familie-theater Davids, but Heintje couldn't join it, because she was very short, overweight and didn't have a beautiful voice.
Despite this rejection, Heintje Davids joined the revue as singer and comedian in 1907. She was very beloved for her sense of humor and quick-wittedness. She also sang duets with her brother Louis Davids for several years (starting in 1910). In the 1930's she played in five movies, like The Tars/De Jantjes (1934); and Showmen on the fair/Kermisgasten (1936). Some of her most famous songs were: 'Zandvoort at the seaside'/'Zandvoort aan de Zee' and 'Swirling'/'Draaien'.
In 1942 she had to go into hiding for the occupying Nazi regime during the Second World War (1940-1945). As only member of the family, she survived the war.

After the war she started singing her old repertoire again. Shortly after officially ending her career in 1954, her husband died and she made a grand comeback. In the following years, time and time again she announced her retirement. This phenomenon, repeatedly saying goodbye and coming back, was even called 'the Heintje Davids-effect' ('het heintjedavids-effect'). She kept singing eventually until the 1960's.
The song 'Because I love you really much'/'Omdat ik zoveel van je hou' was part of the movie The Tars/De Jantjes (1934), one of the most populair Dutch films in the 1930's. Heintje Davids was starring alongside legendary famous actress Fien de la Mar. The comical love song was a duet with actor and singer Sylvain Poons (1896-1985). His most famous song was 'Ballad of the Southern Sea'/'Zuiderzeeballade' (1959), but he also sang other duets with Heintje Davids, like 'Swirling'/'Draaien' and 'Do you remember, granny'/'Weet je nog wel, oudje'.
A fragment of the original film images of the song 'Because I love you really much' has been preserved (link opens youtube).
