Joseph Schmidt (1904-1942) was a singer from Austria. He was educated as tenor at the conservatory in Berlin, Germany (in 1925). Because of his enormous talent, the director arranged his education for free. Joseph Schmidt spoke Yiddish (he had jewish parents), German and Rumanian.

In 1929 he sang for the radio for the first time and he was instantly famous. He was employed by Radio Berlin, but refused to perform on stage, because he was shy and ashamed for his appearance (he was very short). He only started to sing in the theatre, when they designed a bridge for him on stage. He was praised in all newspapers. He also started to record albums, especially with opera, operetta and German songs.

Joseph Schmidt made theatrical tours through Europe and America (including New York and San Francisco). In 1937 American newspapers wrote: "We saw two world wonders this year: the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge and the première of Joseph Schmidt". Although they tried to persuade him to stay in the United States, he returned to Europe, because he missed his mother.

However in 1938 as a jew he had to flee for the Nazi regime from Austria to the Netherlands and Belgium. After World War II broke out, he could go to Cuba by boat in 1941, but ten days before his departure, all maritime shipping ended. Joseph Schmidt went to friends in France and tried to reach Switserland in 1942. After walking six nights in a row, he reached the neutral country, but was exhausted and sick. He died because of a heart attack in november 1942.

As a tenor he was very beloved in the Netherlands, but nowadays he is only remembered for the Dutch song he recorded: 'I love you, Holland'/'Ik hou van Holland' (1937). He sang it in almost accentless Dutch. The song, a tango, is still famous. It was very successfully covered by child star Heintje in 1970 (link opens youtube), making it again a hit (a bit more uptempo). And the song is used as intro of the hit television show I love Holland/Ik hou van Holland (airing since 2008).
