Toon Hermans (1916-2000) was a Dutch cabaret artist, singer, painter and poet (born in Limburg). He is considered to be one of the 'Great Three' of Dutch cabaret (with Wim Sonneveld and Wim Kan). In the Netherlands, 'cabaret' is a kind of theatre in which someone, usually in a one man show, tells a story or series of anecdotes (personal or critical about politics/society or just hilarious) with jokes and songs.
In 1935-1941 Toon Hermans wrote and performed revues in Limburg. In 1942 he moved to Amsterdam and played in revues, comical theatre shows and the radio programme The colourful tuesday evening train/De bonte dinsdagavondtrein (1948-1957). Based on this success, he made 15 one-man shows (between 1955 and 1997), introducing a complete new kind of theatre in the Netherlands. He also played his shows in Germany and Austria.
Toon Hermans was extremely beloved by the public and his one-man shows were very, very successful. In the biggest theatre in Amsterdam, Carré, his shows sold out for over three months in a row (where for other artists three evenings in Amsterdam were normal). Every three years, his latest show was broadcasted on TV, causing the streets to be literally empty.
Hermans was known for his love for funny nonsense, linguistic feeling and wordplays, his hilarious characters, his funny faces and small poetry. Recurring themes were the importance of love and his love for life.

Well-known songs are 'Like a balloon'/'Als een ballonnetje' (1958); 'Notte Belle Margarinetta' (1958); 'Twenty-seven roses'/'Vierentwintig rozen' (1966); 'This is a place to love'/'Dit is een plek om lief te hebben' (1967); 'Mien where is my nose'/'Mien waar is m'n neus' (1968, carnival song); and 'The apples on the table cloth'/'De appels op de tafelsprei' (1972). He also wrote love songs for his wife and love of his life Rietje (who died in 1990), like 'Springtime me'/'Lente me' (1993); and 'If love didn't exist'/'Als de liefde niet bestond' (2000).
Toon Hermans released dozens of singles, albums, books, poetry and DVD's. He was awarded with (amongst other prizes) a Golden Harp (1979), was Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau (1965) and won the Artist of the Century Award (1999).
Hermans founded over 50 walk-in consultation houses for cancer patients and their family, after Rietje had died of cancer. In 2010 a musical about his life and work was staged, called TOON. His birthplace Sittard (Limburg) has a statue of him since 2003 and since 2016 a permanent exposition of his work.
Above song is a bilingual song: Dutch is combined with French. In 'Méditerranée' (French for Mediterranean Sea), Hermans expresses unmistakable his love for France and the French language. He plays with French and English words and ridicules a bit the Dutch and English tourists.
Other bilingual songs on this website include e.g. Dutch-English and Dutch-Surinamese.
