Dutch song Toon Hermans - Mediterranee
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
Méditerranée, so blue, so blue
Méditerranée, so blue, so blue
With your mademoiselles
Belles, belles, belles
Méditerranée
Méditerranée, zo blauw, zo blauw
Méditerranée, zo blauw, zo blauw
Met je mademoiselles
Belles, belles, belles
Méditerranée
Méditerranée, so blue, so blue
Méditerranée, so blue, so blue
With chapeau de paille
And your slender waist-line
Méditerranée
Méditerranée, zo blauw, zo blauw
Méditerranée, zo blauw, zo blauw
Met chapeau de paille
En je slanke taille
Méditerranée
I'm sunbathing here in my nudy
In this earthly paradise
Ik lig in mijn niksie te brunen
Daar in dat aards paradijs
Méditerranée, so blue, so blue
Méditerranée, so blue, so blue
With your slender filles
Easy waterskiing
Méditerranée
Méditerranée, zo blauw, zo blauw
Méditerranée, zo blauw, zo blauw
Met je slanke filles
Op de waterskieën
Méditerranée
A bottle, a glass
La joie, la jeunesse
An apple, a sourball
A sugar cube, chewing gum, pear
A Russian, a Turk
A Sir and a sis
A Mädchen, a maiden
Signora, a girl, a lord
Een glas en een fles
La joie, la jeunesse
Een appel, een zuurtje
Een klontje, een kauwgum, een peer
Een Turk en een Rus
Een Sir en een zus
Een Mädchen, een meisje
Signora, a girl, een heer
A hand and a rendez-footsie
Ça va, bitte schön, how are you
Een hand en een rendez-voetje
Ça va, bitte schön, how are you
Méditerranue, so blue, so blue
Méditerranue, so blue, so blue
With your coca cola
And your hela hola
Méditerranée
Méditerannue, so blue, so blue
Méditerannue, so blue, so blue
Met je coca cola
En je hela hola
Méditerranée
Middle Landlocked Sea, so blue, so blue
Middle Landlocked Sea, so blue, so blue
With your bulky waffles
And your naked n... [navels, belly buttons]
Middellandse See, so blauw, so blauw
Middellandse See, so blauw, so blauw
Met je dikke wafels
En je blote n...
Then I asked Germaine to kiss me
But do you know what she replied
Ik vroeg om een zoen aan Germaine
Maar weet u wat of ze toen zee
Méditerrano, no no, no no
Méditerrano, no no, no no
With your bronzing sunshine
And the promenade
Of the Méditerranée
Driejelderel del del del del, holé, hahaha
Méditerranée, nee nee, nee nee
Méditerranée, nee nee, nee nee
Met je zonnebaden
En de promenade
Van de Méditerranée
Driejelderel del del del del, holé, hahaha
The night, le soir
Miss blue, miss noir
Bourgogne, champagne
Casino, tuxedo, bellevue
The night, la lune
L'amour, la fortune
A tango, a rumba, a samba
Et rien ne va plus
De nacht, le soir
Miss bleu, miss noir
Bourgogne, champagne
Casino, smoking, bellevue
De nacht, la lune
L’amour, la fortune
Een tango, een rumba, een samba
Et rien ne va plus
And I, I see la vie en rose
I dance with mes jeux dans tes jeux
En ik, ik zie la vie en rose
Ik dans met mes jeux dans tes jeux
With your little Cupid
In a wooden vessel
Méditerranée
Met je cupidootje
In een houten bootje
Méditerranée
With your sultry singing
Your refreshing, soft cheeks
Méditerranée
Met je zwoele zangen
En je koele wangen
Méditerranée
But soon now the sun will be rising
And will shine on the striptease-revue
Maar straks gaat de zon weer naar boven
En ze schijnt op de stripteaserevue
Méditerranow, so now and then
Are you somewhat nue
So now and then
Then I will faint and pass out
In my undertrousers
Médiwuwuwuwuwuwuwuwu
Méditerannu, zo nu en dan
Ben je wel wat nue
Zo nu en dan
Dan ga ik van mijn stokkie
In mijn interlokkie
Médiwuwuwuwuwuwuwuwu
So blue
So blue
Zo blauw
Zo blauw

Toon Hermans (1916-2000) was a Dutch cabaret artist, singer, painter and poet (born in Limburg). He is considered to be one of the 'Great Three' of Dutch cabaret (with Wim Sonneveld and Wim Kan). In the Netherlands, 'cabaret' is a kind of theatre in which someone, usually in a one man show, tells a story or series of anecdotes (personal or critical about politics/society or just hilarious) with jokes and songs.
In 1935-1941 Toon Hermans wrote and performed revues in Limburg. In 1942 he moved to Amsterdam and played in revues, comical theatre shows and the radio programme The colourful tuesday evening train/De bonte dinsdagavondtrein (1948-1957). Based on this success, he made 15 one-man shows (between 1955 and 1997), introducing a complete new kind of theatre in the Netherlands. He also played his shows in Germany and Austria.
Toon Hermans was extremely beloved by the public and his one-man shows were very, very successful. In the biggest theatre in Amsterdam, Carré, his shows sold out for over three months in a row (where for other artists three evenings in Amsterdam were normal). Every three years, his latest show was broadcasted on TV, causing the streets to be literally empty.
Hermans was known for his love for funny nonsense, linguistic feeling and wordplays, his hilarious characters, his funny faces and small poetry. Recurring themes were the importance of love and his love for life.

Well-known songs are 'Like a balloon'/'Als een ballonnetje' (1958); 'Notte Belle Margarinetta' (1958); 'Twenty-seven roses'/'Vierentwintig rozen' (1966); 'This is a place to love'/'Dit is een plek om lief te hebben' (1967); 'Mien where is my nose'/'Mien waar is m'n neus' (1968, carnival song); and 'The apples on the table cloth'/'De appels op de tafelsprei' (1972). He also wrote love songs for his wife and love of his life Rietje (who died in 1990), like 'Springtime me'/'Lente me' (1993); and 'If love didn't exist'/'Als de liefde niet bestond' (2000).
Toon Hermans released dozens of singles, albums, books, poetry and DVD's. He was awarded with (amongst other prizes) a Golden Harp (1979), was Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau (1965) and won the Artist of the Century Award (1999).
Hermans founded over 50 walk-in consultation houses for cancer patients and their family, after Rietje had died of cancer. In 2010 a musical about his life and work was staged, called TOON. His birthplace Sittard (Limburg) has a statue of him since 2003 and since 2016 a permanent exposition of his work.
Above song is a bilingual song: Dutch is combined with French. In 'Méditerranée' (French for Mediterranean Sea), Hermans expresses unmistakable his love for France and the French language. He plays with French and English words and ridicules a bit the Dutch and English tourists.
Other bilingual songs on this website include e.g. Dutch-English and Dutch-Surinamese.
