Dutch song Jan Boezeroen - Vondel was goed
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
A farmer, who never was tired somehow
Did care for his pigs and his bull and his (cow)
Grandma, who thought that a man needs a wife
And that he should marry, that's normal in (life)
Once at a dancing he took a first step
He met there a girl and fell into her (trap)
Notice, 'cause she thought, this girl from the south,
He reeked to manure and he reeked from his (mouth)
Vondel was good
Boy, the best in rhyming
I give it a try
But it makes my head turn
I see, I never will (learn)
Vondel was good
Vondel was goed
Man, wat kon die rijmen
Als ik het probeer
Merk ik iedere keer
Dat ik er nooit wat van (leer)
Vondel was goed
She was a big lady, two hundred pounds, but
He loved most of all her so very nice (butt)
Appetite, she ate for fun, so she said
But he rather had a sweet angel in (bed)
Cooking, she loved it, the food she prepared
But both love and men always made her feel (scared)
Sad, 'cause she had an enourmous complex
Guys, she believed, they want nothing but (sex)
Vondel was good
Boy, the best in rhyming
I give it a try
But it makes my head turn
I see, I never will (learn)
Vondel was good
Vondel was goed
Man, wat kon die rijmen
Als ik het probeer
Merk ik iedere keer
Dat ik er nooit wat van (leer)
Vondel was goed
But all of their problems at last disappeared
She wouldn't go with him, he thought that was (weird)
Hard, he asked: "What are your thoughts about this"
She first of all gave him a big smacking (kiss)
Coffee, too weak, well, but love makes you mild
They slept in the hay and she did get a (child)
Colour, proposed her, she thought that was top
They married and then they had babies non (stop)
Vondel was good
Boy, the best in rhyming
I give it a try
But it makes my head turn
I see, I never will (learn)
Vondel was good
Vondel was goed
Man, wat kon die rijmen
Als ik het probeer
Merk ik iedere keer
Dat ik er nooit wat van (leer)
Vondel was goed
Vondel was good
Boy, the best in rhyming
I give it a try
But it makes my head turn
I see, I never will (learn)
Vondel was good
Vondel was goed
Man, wat kon die rijmen
Als ik het probeer
Merk ik iedere keer
Dat ik er nooit wat van (leer)
Vondel was goed

Jan Boezeroen (1933), stage name of Johnny Goverde, is a Dutch singer. The word 'boezeroen' is an old-fashioned shirt or blouse. The expression 'Jan Boezeroen' means something like 'the man in the street'. The singer is known for his 'life songs' ('levensliedjes'), carnival songs and easy sing-along party songs.
Jan Boezeroen released over 50 singles and scored with seven hits a place in the National Hit Parade Top 40. 'Vondel was good'/'Vondel was goed' (1979), with a number eight position, was his highest scoring hit. It also became populair in dancing schools, because the melody is a waltz.
Other songs by Jan Boezeroen are 'The bottle'/'De fles' (1970), 'Pub in Brabant'/'Brabants café' (1981); and 'When I finally had everything'/'Toen ik eindelijk alles had' (1985).

The above song 'Vondel was good'/'Vondel was goed' is a translation of the American song 'Sweet violets' by Dinah Shore, 1951 (written by Cy Coben and Charles Grean). It is a classic example of a 'censored rhyme' (or 'mind rhyme' or 'teasing rhyme'): the expected rhyme of each couplet is replaced with an unexpected word.
Johnny Goverde (Jan Boezeroen) translated the song himself. The original songtext is also about a farmer and a girl. The first lines, for example, read: 'There once was a farmer who took a young miss / In back of the barn where he gave her a (kiss) / Lecture on horses and chickens and eggs / And told her that she had such beautiful (legs) / Manners (...)'.
The name Vondel refers to the very famous Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679). In the 17th century, the Dutch 'Golden Century', he wrote plays and poems that are still famous today. The Amsterdam 'Vondelpark' (with his statue) is named after him; he has a big memorial gravestone in the Amsterdam New Church; and for many decades his portrait was on the Dutch 5 guilder banknote.
