Dutch song Herman van Veen - Hilversum 3
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
In the good old days they sang and whistled in the street
Every butcher's boy still had an opera at hand
The mason could be singing on the scaffolding
The whistling milkman sneaky poured water in the milk
Vroeger werd gezongen en gefloten in de straat
Had de slagersjongen nog een opera paraat
De metselaar kon zingend op de steiger staan
De melkboer lengde fluitend zijn melk een beetje aan
Radio 3 did not exist
But everyone could sing a song
On scaffoldings they sang along
'Bout clowns or 'bout Jerusalem
Hilversum III bestond nog niet
Maar ieder had zijn eigen stem
Op elke steiger klonk een lied
Van paljas of Jeruzalem
Vendors had their own invented aria's
'Bout sprat and herring or begonia's
In factories you heared from all around
Once more a small tune through the working place
Alle venters hadden eigen aria's
Voor sprot en haring, voor begonia's
Zelfs in fabrieken kwam van overal
Toch weer een liedje door de grote hal
Radio 3 did not exist
But everyone could sing a song
On scaffoldings they sang along
'Bout clowns or 'bout Jerusalem
Hilversum III bestond nog niet
Maar ieder had zijn eigen stem
Op elke steiger klonk een lied
Van paljas of Jeruzalem
In between the rattling of machineries
Sounded a nice choir of young girls sewing clothes
Dreaming 'bout a prince from far away
Who'd elope them to his castle in the air
Tussen het geratel van machines door
Klonk in de confectie een mooi meisjeskoor
Dromend van de prins van weet-ik-veel
Die ze zou ontvoeren naar zijn luchtkasteel
Radio 3 did not exist
But everyone could sing a song
On scaffoldings they sang along
'Bout clowns or 'bout Jerusalem
Hilversum III bestond nog niet
Maar ieder had zijn eigen stem
Op elke steiger klonk een lied
Van paljas of Jeruzalem
Radio 3 did not exist
But everyone could sing a song
On scaffoldings they sang along
'Bout clowns or 'bout Jerusalem
Hilversum III bestond nog niet
Maar ieder had zijn eigen stem
Op elke steiger klonk een lied
Van paljas of Jeruzalem
