André Hazes (1951-2004) was an Amsterdam 'volkszanger' (singer for the common people) and is considered to be one of the best writers and interpreters of the 'life song' ('levenslied'): songs about the common people and the problems, misery and hardship of daily life.
Some of his biggest hits are: The kite (1977); 'A little in love' (1981); Give me your fears (1983); and My small boy (1990). In 2000 he was awarded with the Edison Oeuvre Award.
Hazes released above song 'We love our Orange football team'/'Wij houden van Oranje' (1988) in the weeks before the start of the 1988 European Football Championship. The Netherlands won this Cup on 25 juni 1988. It was the first and so far only time the Netherlands became European Champion. After this, the song became a number 1 hit in the Top 40 (16 weeks in Top 40, three weeks on number 1).

The colour orange refers to the Dutch Royal House of Orange-Nassou. It is the national or royal colour in the Netherlands. The red-white-blue refers to the Dutch flag. The 'Wilhelmus' is the Dutch national anthem, about our Father of the Nation Willem of Orange-Nassau (1533-1584).
The name 'Holland' is used in English for the whole of the Netherlands. In fact this is not right: only the two provinces in the west, along the North Sea, are called North- and South-Holland (the Netherlands consists of 12 provinces). Even so, also Dutchmen sometimes use 'Holland' in this way, which can severely annoy inhabitants of other provinces.
But the official name of the country is: The Kingdom of the Netherlands/Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (including three Caribbean islands) and the country in Europe is in Dutch simply called: Netherland/Nederland (singular), meaning 'low land'.
The melody of the refrain, is loosely based on the Scottish song 'Auld Lang Syne'.
