André Hazes (1951-2004) was an Amsterdam 'volkszanger' (singer for the common people) and is considered to be one of the best writers and interpreters of the 'life song' (levenslied): songs about the common people and the problems, misery and hardship of daily life. This is usually sung lamenting with whines and whimpers, with an Amsterdam accent, often accompanied by accordions.
His biggest hits are for example 'Lonely Christmas'/'Eenzame kerst' (1976); 'A little in love'/'Een beetje verliefd' (1981); 'Not another word'/'Zeg maar niets meer' (1982); 'Give me your fears' (1983); 'Blood, sweat and tears'/'Bloed, zweet en tranen' (1985); 'We love our Orange football team'/'Wij houden van Oranje' (1988); 'My small boy' (1990); and 'She believes in me'/'Zij gelooft in mij' (2004).
Although the song 'The kite' (1977) was not a big hit at that time, it is still voted every year into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year), as high as place 51/2000. No less than 13 of Hazes' hits have been voted into this list over the years.
During his career Hazes released 36 albums. In 2000 he was awarded with the Edison Oeuvre Award.

André Hazes was very popular with the common people, but not appreciated (at all) by the more upper class/educated people. This changed at the end of his life, in 1999, after a documantary about his life that was a big success in the movie theatres. He became more and more a singer for all people and his older hits had nostalgic value for everyone who grew up with it.
Since 2004 Hazes had problems with noise in his ear and deafness, a disaster for his music career. His farewell-concert in the Amsterdam ArenA after his death in 2004 was life on television and got extreme high ratings. His songs were sung by artists like Guus Meeuwis, René Froger, Paul de Leeuw and Xander de Buisonjé; Johan Cruijff made a speech.
Later a musical was made about his life, He believes in me/Hij gelooft in mij (2012-2015). Partly based on this musical a movie was made, Blood, sweat and tears/Bloed, zweet en tranen (2015). His youngest son André Hazes jr. later had hits like 'Hey, old man' (2016).
