Dutch song Kinderen voor Kinderen - Naar de middelbare school
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

I know: it is fantastic
Of course it's the right step
You're fed up with the primary
School after six years
Although you have your friends here
It's so familiar, too
You know you'll soon be leaving
You have to, you're too old
Ik weet: het is fantastisch
Natúúrlijk is het dat
De basisschool die ben je
Na zes jaar ook wel zat
Hoewel, je hebt vriendinnen
En 't is er zó vertrouwd
Nog even, en dan ga je
Je móét, je bent te oud
It's just like swimming lessons
You dive for the first time
With trembling legs, with shivers
And feeling butterflies
It's just like swimming lessons
You dive for the first time
With trembling legs, with shivers
And feeling butterflies
Het is net leren zwemmen
Je neemt je eerste duik
Met bibbers in je benen
En vlinders in je buik
Het is net leren zwemmen
Je neemt je eerste duik
Met bibbers in je benen
En vlinders in je buik
I know at times I'll think back
To these nice, happy years
Now I am in 'the' sixth grade
That will be 'a' first grade
A dozen groups are starting
Sometimes I feel afraid
The new school will be awesome
But it's so very big
Ik zal nog best vaak denken
Hoe fijn het hier wel was
Nu zit ik in 'de' zesde
Straks in 'een' eerste klas
Er zijn er minstens dertien
Soms ben ik als de dood
Die school is vast het einde
Maar ook ontzettend groot
It's just like swimming lessons
You dive for the first time
With trembling legs, with shivers
And feeling butterflies
It's just like swimming lessons
You dive for the first time
With trembling legs, with shivers
And feeling butterflies
Het is net leren zwemmen
Je neemt je eerste duik
Met bibbers in je benen
En vlinders in je buik
Het is net leren zwemmen
Je neemt je eerste duik
Met bibbers in je benen
En vlinders in je buik
Goodbye sixth grade, hi bridge year
The new school year starts soon
How many of my classmates
Do I already know
And how do you behave, you
No longer play as kids
You hang around, you chatter
It seems so strange to me
Dag zesde klas, hoi brugklas
Nu ik er bijna ben
Zit ik alsmaar te denken
Hoeveel ik er daar ken
En hoe ik met ze omga
Je speelt niet met elkaar
Je wandelt en je praat wat
’t Is allemaal zo raar
It's just like swimming lessons
You dive for the first time
With trembling legs, with shivers
And feeling butterflies
It's just like swimming lessons
You dive for the first time
With trembling legs, with shivers
And feeling butterflies
Het is net leren zwemmen
Je neemt je eerste duik
Met bibbers in je benen
En vlinders in je buik
Het is net leren zwemmen
Je neemt je eerste duik
Met bibbers in je benen
En vlinders in je buik

Kinderen voor Kinderen ('Children for Children', 1980) is a Dutch national children's choir. Every year, since 1980, they release an album with new children's songs for the age of 8 till 13. Every year schoolchildren in that age range are asked what the subjects of the songs should be (like friendship, holiday, pets, starting secondary school, shyness, boredom, handicaps, divorce, war, illness, falling in love, acne, bullying, homework, etc.).
Well-known songwriters, lyricists and composers are asked to write one or two songs for a new record. Contributors were for example: Harry Bannink, Herman Pieter de Boer, Jan Boerstoel, Claudia de Breij, Tonny Eyk, Robert Long, Henk Temming, Henk Westbroek, Willem Wilmink and Ivo de Wijs.
The choir was set up to raise money for charity (especially for children in the Third World) - that explains the name of the choir. Since the 1990's, the choir no longer supports charities. Every year the songs are presented in a big TV-show, just before the new album is launched. This TV-show is also released on dvd.

The choir Children for Children/Kinderen voor Kinderen won 1 time a Diamond Album, 11 times a Platinum Album and 4 times a Golden Album (in 38 years). No less than seven singles (although they're not pop songs) reached the National Hit Parade Top 40.
The above song 'To the secondary school'/'Bijna brugklas' (1981) is sung by Mandy Huijdts. It is about a child that is almost finished with the primary school and will start the secondary school the next school year. In the Netherlands, the primary school lasts six years (6-12 years old).
The secondary school (12-16/18 years old) has several levels, like the mavo (lower secondary education), the havo (higher secondary education) and the vwo (pre-university education). However, many secondary schools have a 'bridge year' to start with, so the choise for a certain level is delayed.
Hans Peters jr. is a songwriter and composer. He is most known for his children's songs. Some of his songs, beside above song, are: 'Singing with Bach'/'Zingen met Bach'; 'It are little things that matter most'/''t Zijn de kleine dingen die het doen' (1971); and 'Me and my pet'/'Ik en m'n beessie' (1980).
