Willy Walden (1905-2003), stage name of Herman Kaldewaaij, was a revue artist and later radio host from Amsterdam. After several revues, he was asked to be a cast member of the radio programme The colourful tuesday evening train/De bonte dinsdagavondtrein (1948-1957).
Willy Walden and singer Piet Muijselaar (1899-1978) made an act as the duo Snip and Snap (dressed up as ladies). It was such a success, that the act for just one night, became a complete revue in the theatres - that lasted for forty years (1937-1977). Above song was sung for the first time in the Snip and Snap revue Cluck cluck cluck, another egg/Tok tok tok, alweer een ei (1943).
Willy Walden had just one big hit, during the Second World War: above song 'When on the Leidseplein'/'Als op het Leidseplein' (1943). The Leidseplein is a busy, well-known square in Amsterdam, in the old inner city. It has several theatres and cafes. The Netherlands were occupied by Nazi-Germany from 1940-1945.

In the song a man and his girlfriend are dreaming about the end of the war, about peace. The blackout (darkening streets and houses) will be over, the street lights will burn again and the streets will be busy again in the evening. The Nazi-occupiers didn't forbid the song, because in their view the lights would burn again after their victory.
The song was written by Jacques van Tol (1897-1969). He was the regular lyricist for Louis Davids and Snip & Snap, with famous songs like (besides above song): 'To the bulb fields'/'Naar de bollen' (1936); 'On the Grebbeberg'/'Op de Grebbeberg' (1940); and 'I've forgotten your name'/'Hoe je heette' (1954).
Cor Steyn (1906-1965) was a pianist and composer. After the conservatory he started to play the piano with silent movies. Later he wrote film music, worked for radio and television and accompanied many artists in their shows. He also composed the song 'Two clothes moths' (1956).
