Dutch song Lenny Kuhr - De troubadour
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
His music fully filled his mind
He sang for many and for few
He spread out joy, melancholy
The troubadour
Hij zat zo boordevol muziek
Hij zong voor groot en klein publiek
Hij maakte blij, melancholiek
De troubadour
He sang for knights in the High Hall
A long and bloody history
In words that sounded firm and strong
The troubadour
Voor ridders in de hoge zaal
Zong hij in stoere, sterke taal
Een lang en bloederig verhaal
De troubadour
But also workmen in the barn
Heard the adventures in his song
Sitting by the kitchen's fire at night
The troubadour, the troubadour
Maar ook het werkvolk uit de schuur
Hoorde zijn lied vol avontuur
Hoorde bij 't nacht'lijk keukenvuur
De troubadour, de troubadour
And in the tavern of the town
He sang a drinking song to cheer
With men who could stand or sat down
The troubadour, the troubadour
En in de herberg van de stad
Zong hij een drinklied op het nat
Voor wie nog staan kon en wie zat
De troubadour, de troubadour
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
In monasteries he sang so quiet
About unfolding miracles
And wonders we don't even see
The troubadour
Hij zong in kloosters stil zijn lied
Van een mirakel dat geschiedt
Ook als geen mens het wonder ziet
De troubadour
His singing touched, confused the hearts
Of ladies, dressed in velvet grey,
His love songs travelled 'round with him
The troubadour
Van vrouwen in fluweel of grijs
Zong hij de harten van de wijs
Zijn liefdeslied ging mee op reis
De troubadour
He sang for farmers on their fields
A farmer's song he wrote himself
He sang for every social class
The troubadour, the troubadour
Hij zong voor boeren op het land
Een kerelslied van eigen hand
Hij was van elke rang en stand
De troubadour, de troubadour
Like this he sang his whole life long
The songs he wrote, in his own sound
But even then death will appear
The troubadour, the troubadour
Zo zong hij heel zijn leven lang
Zijn eigen lied, zijn eigen zang
Toch gaat de dood gewoon zijn gang
De troubadour, de troubadour
The songs were over, silence came
Some mud, some dust left in the end
But all, comforted by his song
Remember him
Toen werd het stil, het lied was uit
Enkel wat modder tot besluit
Maar wie getroost werd door zijn lied
Vergeet hem niet
'Cause his music fully filled his mind
He sang for many and for few
He spread out joy, melancholy
The troubadour
Want hij zat zo boordevol muziek
Hij zong voor groot en klein publiek
Hij maakte blij, melancholiek
De troubadour
Oho, la lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
Oho, la lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
Oh, la lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai la la la
Oh johohoho
Oh, la lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai lala la
La lala la lala, lai la la lai la la
La lala lai la la la
Oh johohoho

Lenny Kuhr (1950) is a Dutch singer and songwriter. At the beginning of her career, 19 years old, she won the Eurovision Song Contest (1969) with above song 'The troubadour' (lyrics of David Hartsema, the music she wrote herself). Afterwards it was translated to German, Italian, English, Spanish and French and released in many countries.
When she wrote the music for the song 'The troubadour' Lenny Kuhr was only 17 years old and still lived with her parents. When she had finished composing in the middle of the night, she woke her parents to play it for them. The song became her personal anthem through her career, because she felt later in life she had become a troubadour herself.
Lenny Kuhr worked often together with lyrics writer Herman Pieter de Boer and released about 15 albums through the years. Her biggest hits were, besides 'The troubadour' (1969): 'The children'/'Les enfants' (1972); 'Come, sweetheart, give me your hand'/'Kom, liefste geef me je hand' (1974); 'Visitors'/'Visite' (1980); and 'Well anyway'/'Maar ja' (1980).

Above song was in the National Hit Parade Top 40 for seven weeks (highest position: 12). It has been voted into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year) nine times. In 2017 Kuhr won the Buma Lifetime Achievement Award (the former Golden Harp).
David Hartsema (1925-2009) was a Dutch poet, lyrics writer and artist. He wrote often songs and poems in Frisian and in Groningen dialect. Lenny Kuhr asked him for songtexts after she won the talent show For the unknown in 1967. He gave her, amongst other lyrics, 'The troubadour' and the rest is history.
The Netherlands won the Eurovision Song Contest four times, also with: 'Like those days', Corry Brokken (1957); 'A little', Teddy Scholten (1959); and 'Ding-a-dong', Teach-In (1975).
