Dutch song Danny de Munk - Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
Damn you all with bad diseases
Everyone can just go to hell
I know I'll end up in the gutter
So why be good and go to school
Other kids on the streets won't play with me
They call me 'Rat', are pointing at me
The only one I do really care for
Is never home, it is my dad
Kinderen willen niet met me spelen
Noemen me 'Rat' en wijzen me na
De enige die me wat kan schelen
Die is er nooit, dat is m'n pa
My mother hardly tolerates me
Never do right in her eyes
And love is something I don't have to ask for
She's only swearing, calling names
No wonder that my dad has gone sailing
I couldn't go, I am too small
I have to manage by myself here
Until he will be back one day
I just want someone to love and care for
Two tender arms embracing me
Two arms keeping me safe for ever
I'm feeling so goddamn alone
Twee zachte armen om me heen
Die mij altijd beschermen zouden
Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen
Perhaps when father's ship arrives
When he has returned from sea again
He might ask me: "Listen, Cis
Why don't you join me to the sea"
Misschien als vaders schip er is
Als-ie weer terug is van de zee
Zegt-ie nog eens: "Luister, Cis
Waarom ga je niet met me mee"
I am still only just a child
And I can't cope all by myself
Perhaps some time I will find happiness
But how, that's still a question now
I just want someone to love and care for
Two tender arms embracing me
Two arms keeping me safe for ever
I'm feeling so goddamn alone
Twee zachte armen om me heen
Die mij altijd beschermen zouden
Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen
Two arms keeping me safe for ever
I'm feeling so goddamn alone
Die mij altijd beschermen zouden
Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen

Danny de Munk (Amsterdam, 1970) is a Dutch singer, musical artist and actor. Only 12 years old, he was chosen to play the leading part in the film Ciske de Rat (1984). This costume drama, a book adaptation, takes place in the 1930's. Ciske (nickname 'Rat') is a typical Amsterdam, poor, naughty boy, having a hard life with a mother who mistreats and beats him and a father at sea.
The title song 'I'm feeling so goddamn alone'/'Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen' (1984) was written by the famous singer Herman van Veen (known for songs like 'Long lasting love', 'Anne' and 'Radio 3'), who plays the school teacher in the movie. The swearing in the first line, cursing someone with a disease (cholera in this case), is typical for the Dutch language and is considered very rude.
The song was a big number 1 hit. It was in the National Hit Parade Top 40 for fourteen weeks, of which two weeks on number 1. It has been voted into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year) thirteen times, as high as place 524/2000.

From 1991 onward, Danny de Munk played 12 leading musical roles (Les Misérables, Elisabeth, Titanic, The Lion King and others). In the musical Ciske de Rat (2007-2009) he played Ciske as adult. In 2016-2017 (now 46 years old) he appeared on stage as older Ciske for the last time. Both musicals were also book adaptations: the original books about Ciske de Rat, by Piet Bakker, were a trilogy.
From 2008 onward, he started again recording albums and giving concerts. He chose to sing 'life songs' ('levenslied'), songs about the common people and the problems, misery and hardship of daily life, with an unmistakable Amsterdam accent. Feeling connected with the Amsterdam 'life song' singers (like Johnny Jordaan, André Hazes and Willy Alberti) in the first place, he considers Ciske as a returning theme in his life.
