Dutch song Boudewijn de Groot - Eva
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext
The world is resting in my hand
The egg of glass with clouds and land mass
I will let people live in heaven
I call the farns out of the sand
Ik houd de wereld in mijn hand
Het glazen ei vol land en wolken
Ik zal de hemel gaan bevolken
Ik roep de varens uit het zand
I summon monkeys from my sleeve
The tiny ants, the speckled-panthers
The creeping scrabble-beasts, blue rabbits
I sprinkle dew, topaz, azure
Ik schud de apen uit mijn mouw
De spikkelpanters en de mieren
Het blauw konijn, de krabbeldieren
Ik strooi topaas, azuur en dauw
I know that I'm almighty now
I know the animals by fur
The birds all by the tunes they sing
I give the man the name I want
Ik weet nu dat ik alles kan
Ik ken de dieren aan hun vel
De vogels aan hun notenspel
En ik geef namen aan de man
The paint that I spilled
Suddenly catches fire
My pallet falls out of my hand
The earth's swinging open
I see her walking
On my own green fields and lawns
De verf die ik morste
Vliegt plotseling in brand
't Pallet valt vlammend uit mijn hand
De aarde zwaait open
Ik zie haar lopen
In mijn eigen groene gras
Do you want, white creature
That I don't know you
Don't have all power anymore
You want to forget me
And eat the fruit I grew
And then deceive me with your man
Wil jij soms wit wezen
Dat ik je niet ken
En dat ik niet almachtig ben
Je wilt me vergeten
Mijn vruchten eten
En me bedriegen met je man
Your body, alabaster white
Is full of burning flames, rose coloured
And everything you set your mind to
Falls in your hands, you spoiled my world
Hier in je lichaam van albast
Zie ik de roze vlammen branden
En wat je wilt, valt in je handen
Je hebt mijn wereld aangetast
The creeping green-dot-spotted cat
Crushes the blackbird with it's jaws now
The iguana blows some bubbles
Crawls with five legs along the path
Daar sluipt de groen gevlekte kat
En heeft de merel al te grazen
De leguaan gaat bellen blazen
Kruipt op vijf poten over het pad
The polyp-tree grows in the lake
It's strings of glass are softly tinkling
An owl, high in the crystal pillars
Whistles it's smooth and bawdy songs
De vleesboom rijst het water uit
En rinkelt met zijn glazen snaren
Er zit in de kristalpilaren
Een uil die schuine liedjes fluit
I look like a fool
In my robe and I thought
I could do everything I want
As soon as I'm gone though
The angel comes silently
On tiptoe with the giant knife
Hier sta ik voor zot
In mijn kamerjapon
Ik dacht wel dat ik alles kon
En ben ik verdwenen
Dan komt op zijn tenen
De engel met het grote mes

Boudewijn de Groot (1944) is one of Netherlands's most famous singers, songwriters and composers. De Groot met lyrics writer Lennaert Nijgh (1945-2002) during high school and in 1964 he recorded some of their songs, but success stayed out. Also an album with covers and own songs (1965) didn't do much.
In 1966 they released the album For the survivors/Voor de overlevenden, with songs Lennaert Nijgh wrote about his childhood and early loves (with songs like 'Testament', 'Drowned butterfly'/'Verdronken vlinder', and 'Without friends I cannot live'/ 'Zonder vrienden kan ik niet'). It was an immense success, they won a Platinum Record and an Edison Music Award. The next year they achieved a number one position with the single 'The countryside of Maas and Waal'/'Het land van Maas en Waal'.

In 1968 they released the hippie-album Picknick, with psychedelic lyrics and music (inspired by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's) with songs like 'Eva' and 'Prikkebeen'. After some years writing for other artists and little contact, De Groot and Nijgh had again success together with the L.P. How strong is the lonely biker/Hoe sterk is de eenzame fietser (1973). Again awarded with a Platinum Record and an Edison Music Award.
In the following decades, De Groot produced many records and wrote songs for other artists (like Rob de Nijs, Hans de Booij and Henny Vrienten), besides own singles and records, and he played the leading role in the musical Tsjechov (1991-1993).
In 1996 he worked again with Lennaert Nijgh, leading to the album A new autumn/Een nieuwe herfst. One of Boudewijn de Groot's greatest hits was 'Evening'/'Avond' (1997), which was written by Lennaert Nijgh in 1973. Above song was in the National Hit Parade Top 40 for ten weeks (highest position: 9). No less than 17 of De Groot's hits have been voted into the Top 2000 over the years.

The song 'Eva' (1968) was inspired by the painting 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' by Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516). This triptych displays the creation of Eve (left); the sinful humans (in the middle); and the hell (right), in a landscape full of strange animals and creatures (click on above picture for whole painting). When you close the triptych, on the front side is a painting of the world as a transparent round ball, with land in the lower half and clouds in top. When you 'swing' the panels open, Eve appears.
