Come with me to the countryside
we look there for the golden oriole
and when we hear this vocalist
then the summer has returned.
Dudeldjo is his song
dudeldjo is his song
dudeldjo and nothing else!
Kom mee naar buiten allemaal
dan zoeken wij de wielewaal
en horen wij dien muzikant
dan is zomer weer in 't land!
Dudeldjo klinkt zijn lied
dudeldjo klinkt zijn lied
dudeldjo en anders niet.
The oak-wood is the place he lives
he's dressed up with gold feathers and black wings
he sounds just as the shepherd's pipe
and like magic we feel joy.
Dudeldjo is his song
dudeldjo is his song
dudeldjo and nothing else!
Hij woont in 't dichte eikenbos
getooid met gouden vederdos.
Daar jodelt hij op zijn schalmei
tovert onze harten blij.
Dudeldjo klinkt zijn lied
dudeldjo klinkt zijn lied
dudeldjo en anders niet.

The floor broom, the floor broom
what good is it for, what good is it for?
You sweep with it, you sweep with it
the floor, the floor.
De bezem, de bezem
wat doe je ermee, wat doe je ermee?
Je veegt ermee, je veegt ermee
de vloer, de vloer.

Heaven and earth can come to an end.
Joyful musicians, joyful musicians
joyful musicians always remain!
Hemel en aarde kunnen vergaan.
Vrolijke musici, vrolijke musici
vrolijke musici blijven bestaan!

Look, the river named the Rhône flows real wild
would you like to cross it, you can try this way:
two of you in a full gallop to the other side
don't look down into the water, hop, we reach the land.
De rivier de Rhône is een wilde vloed
wil je oversteken, kijk dan hoe het moet.
Met z'n tweeën in galoppas naar de overkant
en niet in de diepte kijken, hup we zijn aan land.

Look, see the sun, so lovely bright.
Birds singing clearly all around.
Hear the rustling wind, yes it too sings along.
In the meadows frolic the cows gay around
Joyful is my song, who will sing along?
't Zonnetje schijnt zoo heerlijk schoon.
't Vogeltje zingt op held'ren toon.
't Windje suist zoo zacht, ja het zingt met ons mee.
In de weiden dartelt het jolige vee.
Lustig klinkt mijn lied, wie zingt met mij mee?

Mokum's burning, Mokum's burning
in the distance, in the distance
fire, fire
fire, fire
and they have no water.
Brand in Mokum, brand in Mokum
zie eens ginder, zie eens ginder
brand, brand
brand, brand
en daar is geen water.
|
|
Dutch canon, children's song.
Text: The word 'Mokum' is a nickname for Amsterdam. It is the jewish word for 'city'.
Commentary: Translation of the English canon, 'London's burning / Fetch the engines / Fire, fire / Pour on water'. The text probably refers to the Great Fire of London (1666). The Dutch version sounds very unlikely, because Amsterdam has a lot of water in all the canals.
Lyrics 'Brand in Mokum' on Dutch website: Canons met muziek.

The owl sat in the elm tree at nightfall in the dark
and from the distant hilltop the cuckoo answered quiet:
coo coo, coo coo, coo coo coo coo coo coo
coo coo, coo coo, coo coo coo coo coo coo.
De uil zat in de olme bij het vallen van de nacht
en op de gindse heuvel daar klonk het antwoord zacht:
koekoek, koekoek, koekoe koekoe koekoek
koekoek, koekoek, koekoe koekoe koekoek.

Three gooses on oat straw bales
sit around and cackle loud.
Suddenly the farmer
pokes the piles of oat straws.
He shouts: "Hello, hello, hello!"
Three very fat and greasy gooses on the oat straw bales.
Drie ganzen in 't haverstro
zitten daar en snaat'ren zo.
Komt de boer geslopen,
port eens in de hopen.
Hij roept: "Hallo, hallo, hallo!"
Drie hele dikke vette ganzen in het haverstro.
